Overcrowded homes, limited access to education, poverty, and unsafe public spaces make them particularly vulnerable to abuse, exploitation, and early marriage. According to UNICEF, over 1 in 3 girls in Uganda experience some form of violence before the age of 18, with girls living in informal settlements among the most at risk. EMPOWERING GIRLS AND TEENAGE MOTHERS THROUGH MENSTRUAL HEALTH AND HYGIENE PROGRAMS

In Uganda, menstruation remains one of the biggest barriers to education for adolescent girls. Many girls lack access to sanitary products, private facilities, and accurate information on menstrual health, forcing them to miss school during their periods. According to UNICEF, adolescent girls in Uganda may miss up to 11% of school days each month due to menstruation-related challenges. For teenage mothers, the obstacles are even greater. Despite government policies aimed at reintegration, 70% of teenage mothers do not return to school after giving birth, often because of financial constraints and limited family or community support.

When the rainy season arrives in the slums, it does not just bring water from the skies it brings fear, disruption, and heartbreak.For many families, the rain is a dreaded visitor. Without proper drainage systems, the water has nowhere to go. It collects in dirty pools along narrow walkways, overflows from blocked trenches, and forces its way into homes. Nothing is spared. Mattresses are soaked, clothes are ruined, food is spoiled and sometimes, even the people are drenched as they sleep.

Training of Educators to Strengthen Child Protection measures in Schools in Western Uganda

Joy for Children Uganda has accelerated its efforts to protect children in schools from violence by conducting a series of trainings for educators on Violence against Children (VAC) and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) prevention and response. A total of 380 (141 female 236 males) teachers drawn from 17 districts in Western Uganda under the Uganda Secondary Education Expansion Project (USEEP) - Lot 3 project area participated in the trainings. Each school was represented by key staff, including head teachers, deputy head teachers, senior men and women, directors of studies, and teacher representatives. These individuals were selected deliberately because of their influence on school policy, discipline, and learner wellbeing.
