“In 2014 I got my first high blood pressure attack and I was rushed to Mulago hospital. I don’t remember most of the things because I lost my memory afterwards. My left arm was also mildly paralyzed after that attack. I was later diagnosed with high blood pressure, pneumonia and diabetes. I came here in 2005. I used to live with my husband but he left me with two children and went back to the village. I remember there were days when we would go to bed on empty stomachs because we had nothing. Life was so hard, and I think that’s the time when Joy for children came in and introduced savings groups to us. Then, they later helped with one of my children’s school fees and they would also give us food supplies. We are not doing so well but things are much better than they used to be, at least my children go to school and I can afford to pay rent for my kiosk which also doubles as our home. Despite the challenges in my life, I am always grateful to God every morning for a new day. My advice to people struggling financially is to find something to do and save the little that they earn even if it’s 500UGX. For instance, for a year I was doing laundry for people and through the help of our savings group I was able to raise some money to start this retail business.”
