JOY FOR CHILDREN UGANDA WELCOMES HIGH COURT RULING REENFORCING CHILDRENS RIGHT TO PROTECTION FROM CORPORAL PUNISHMENT
We are deeply saddened by the tragic road accident in Kapchorwa that has claimed the lives of at least 20 primary school children and one adult, the school’s founder and director, Mr. Tadeo Ssekade. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the school community, and everyone affected by this devastating loss.
Preliminary reports from the police indicate that the accident was caused by a mechanical fault. It has also been alleged that concerns about the vehicle’s condition were raised before the journey, but these warnings were ignored.
This tragedy comes only weeks after another road accident involving children returning from a school trip along Katosi Road, emphasizing the urgent need for stronger safety measures during school travel.
Joy for Children’s number one mandate is to ensure all children are protected from violence or harm. Children’s safety must never be compromised by negligence or preventable risks. As schools continue organizing educational trips this term, we call upon school administrators to ensure that every vehicle transporting children is roadworthy, thoroughly inspected, and operated by qualified, professional drivers.
Every school trip should end with children returning safely home. Let this tragedy strengthen our collective commitment to protecting every child’s right to life and safety.
