PRESS RELEASE: UNTIMELY DEATH OF FOUR NURSERY SCHOOL CHILDREN IN GABA

The BRUTAL STABBING LEADING TO DEATH OF 4 JUVENILES AND 3 CRITICALLY INJURED AT GABA EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM SCHOOL.

Joy for Children Uganda is deeply saddened by the tragic death of four juveniles following a brutal stabbing incident at Gaba Early Childhood Development Programme School. According to the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Rachael Kawala, the assailant has been identified as Christopher Okello Onyum. Reports indicate that the suspect had previously visited the school regarding the admission of a child he claimed as his own and had been advised to return after two weeks. On 2nd April 2026, he returned and carried out this horrific act. Three boys and one girl, all under the age of three, tragically lost their lives in this horrendous attack.

This incident raises urgent concerns about the safety and security of children within school environments. What protective measures are in place at school entry points? How are institutions regulating access to their premises, and ensuring that children are released only to authorized individuals? How much security does the security at schools offer?

This heartbreaking tragedy is also call to action for all schools and child-focused institutions to strengthen safeguarding systems. Clear protocols must be established and enforced regarding access control, visitor management, and child pick-up procedures. Even minor lapses in safety can have devastating consequences.

Joy for Children Uganda extends its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased children. We stand with you and the school in this time of profound grief and loss. May justice be served, and may you find strength and comfort in the days ahead.
