SUPPORTING GIRLS IN UGANDA’S SLUM COMMUNITIES TO STAND UP AGAINST VIOLENCE

In Uganda’s slum communities, girls face a reality filled with daily struggles. Overcrowded homes, limited access to education, poverty, and unsafe public spaces make them particularly vulnerable to abuse, exploitation, and early marriage. According to UNICEF, over 1 in 3 girls in Uganda experience some form of violence before the age of 18, with girls living in informal settlements among the most at risk. These challenges rob girls of their childhood and dignity

Girls in slum communities often live in environments where threats of sexual harassment, early marriage, and domestic violence are part of daily life. Schools frequently lack safe spaces or adequate sanitation facilities, and many girls are left without guidance on how to protect themselves or seek help. Social stigma and cultural norms further silence girls who experience violence, leaving them isolated and unsupported.

Joy for Children Uganda has actively responded to these challenges through community awareness and sensitization programs. These initiatives teach girls about their rights, personal safety, and how to stand up for themselves. We also engage teachers, parents, and community leaders, ensuring that the entire community understands the importance of protecting girls and supporting them when they face abuse.

Through these programs, girls like Fatuma, 14, have gained confidence. She shared, “Before the sessions, I didn’t know I had the right to speak up when something was wrong. Now I know my rights and can stand up for myself and my friends.” Community members, including boys, have begun to understand the importance of empathy, respect, and creating safer environments for girls.

Despite these efforts, challenges persist. Many girls still lack access to safe learning environments, menstrual hygiene products, and continuous support. Cultural attitudes and deep-rooted gender norms make it difficult to fully eradicate violence against girls. Limited resources and logistical constraints also prevent programs from reaching all communities in need.

The work of empowering girls and ensuring their safety cannot be done alone. Your support can make a tangible difference. Donations to Joy for Children Uganda enable us to expand awareness programs, equip girls with knowledge of their rights, and strengthen community networks to protect them.

You can contribute and be part of this change today by donating via our Global Giving page https://shorturl.at/dGQsG.  Every contribution helps ensure that girls in Uganda’s slums can grow up safe, confident, and empowered to stand up against violence.
