When the rainy season arrives in the slums, it does not just bring water from the skies it brings fear, disruption, and heartbreak.
For many families, the rain is a dreaded visitor. Without proper drainage systems, the water has nowhere to go. It collects in dirty pools along narrow walkways, overflows from blocked trenches, and forces its way into homes. Nothing is spared. Mattresses are soaked, clothes are ruined, food is spoiled and sometimes, even the people are drenched as they sleep.
Children often wake in the middle of the night, shivering and afraid, as the cold water creeps across the floor and seeps into their beds. What should be their place of safety becomes a place of distress. Parents try desperately to scoop out the water, but more keeps coming. Garbage floats by, and the heavy stench of pollution fills the air.
This is not just uncomfortable. It’s dangerous. Prolonged exposure to floodwater brings serious health risks from waterborne diseases to skin infections and strips people of the dignity and peace they deserve in their own homes.
But even in the darkest storms, there is hope.
At Joy for Children Uganda, we are walking side by side with the affected communities. We are working with local leaders, families, and youth to improve waste management, unclog drainage channels, and find sustainable solutions to reduce flooding. Through clean-up drives, education, and community-led action, we are helping people reclaim their environment and their safety.
We believe no child should have to sleep in water, and no parent should have to fear the rain. And thanks to you our compassionate supporters that belief is becoming a reality.
Your support makes this work possible. You may not be stepping through flooded alleyways yourself, but your impact is felt in every home we help to protect. It is seen in every dry mattress, every healthy child, and every smile of relief when the rain falls and this time, it stays outside.
Will you stand with us and with these families today?
Every donation helps us build safer homes, cleaner environments, and healthier futures for children living in the slums.
