Joy for Children Uganda is saddened by the recent murder of a 19 years senior four student in Mbale District. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and the wider community affected by this tragic act.
According to reports from the police, investigations show that the incident was a result of student gang violence. This event highlights the broader challenges posed by the rise of violence among learners, including physical fights, bullying, emotional abuse, and student strikes within educational institutions.
The safety and wellbeing of children and students remain our highest priority. This incident reminds us of the urgent need to strengthen child protection not only within schools but also in the surrounding communities where learners live and interact daily. We call upon community leaders, parents, and civil society organizations to work together to raise awareness on violence prevention, support vulnerable youth, and build safer environments outside school settings.
We also urge schools, families, and government stakeholders to collaborate in promoting a culture of peace, respect, and empathy among learners. This includes prioritizing life skills education, encouraging open and trusting communication between students and teachers, and investing in mental health and counseling services for young people. Teachers should be supported to identify early signs of distress or conflict, while learners must be equipped with tools to resolve disputes peacefully and responsibly.
At Joy for Children Uganda, we remain committed to working with schools, communities, and national partners to ensure that every learning environment is free from violence as a foundation for academic success, physical and emotional wellbeing for all children.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the bereaved family and stand in solidarity with the school and Mbale district during this painful time.
Let us work together to end violence in schools
