Many girls face considerable pressure to marry early and become mothers while they are still young. Child marriage is a painful reality for far too many girls in Uganda. Driven by the scourge of family poverty and norms that favor boys over girls, child marriage renders girls less likely to complete their education and more likely to experience gender-based violence.
Gender based Violence and all other forms of Violence against children occur at all levels of society, in our homes, communities and schools.
Joy for Children-Uganda organized capacity building workshop on effective and evidence Based Advocacy on elimination of child sexual abuse in Uganda.
This capacity building workshop was designed to increase advocacy knowledge about child sexual exploitation and abuse, including online exploitation .The training presented evidence-based strategies and practices for preventing and responding to child sexual abuse.
The Ministry of Gender, Labor and Social Development with support from UNICEF and Joy for Children-Uganda will embark on the development of a revised National Strategy to End Child Marriage and Teenage Pregnancy in Uganda.
Child marriage is a human rights violation; girls are at a higher risk compared to the boys. Girls who are married off at an early age are likely to drop out of school, become child mothers, endure complications from child birth, and often experience gender based violence.
Child marriage is a global problem that impedes the development, wellbeing and life options of affected individuals and their families. In the past ten years child marriage has emerged as one of the neglected human rights violations and has only recently started to receive global attention.
Joy for Children was happy to take part in the convening by GirlSPARKS. The GirlSPARKS, is a global training initiative, working with organizations and individuals to deliver more effective programming for adolescent girls through an experiential and tailored Girl-Centered Design approach.
